With it’s light weight, full 720p HD resolution and extremely high lumens for a mini projector, you’ll find the Vivitek Qumi Q2 pleasantly surprising.
“What’s the point of having a pocket projector if it can’t even offer you the same performance, quality, and functionality you’d expect from a typical normal-sized projector?” ask Vivitek, a long time producer of larger projectors since the 90’s.
We have to agree, they’ve done a spectacular job with the Qumi Q2. Let’s get stuck into the features…
Mini Projector Features
Well there’s several reasons and the Vivitek Qumi Q2 demonstrates exactly why.
Firstly, there’s portability. You can’t lug your flatscreen around, but you can slip the Qumi Q2 into your laptop bag, work bag, or handbag for that matter.
Weighing just 1.4 pounds (~630 grams) and measuring 3.9 x 6.3 x 1.2 inches (9.9 x 16 x 3 cms) you can see how convenient it is. Whether you’re using it for work or taking it to a friends house, you can have crystal clear 720p projections of up to 90″.
Next there’s the connectivity. The Vivitek Qumi Q2 is part of the new breed of mini projectors that come with a massive range of connectivity options for plugging devices directly into the unit without the need to tether it to a laptop, computer or Bluray, though you can do that if you wish.
Signal compatibility is great with support for SDTV (480i), EDTV (480p), HDTV (720p, 1080i or 1080p), NTSC/NTSC 4.43, PAL B/G/H/I/M/N 60 and SECAM.
You can also plug your USB enabled devices in directly which is great for plugging in rich media devices like digital cameras and handycams, laptops, smart phones, tablets and more.
Memory expansion is available via USB as well as MicroSD (as this seems to be quickly becoming a standard on mini projectors).
The MicroSD card is convenient because you can easily carry important files and browse and access your them directly on the Qumi Q2 using the touch-sensitive button controls on the unit.
This means that it’s a completely self contained device which seems to be following in the footsteps of some other projectors like the Optoma ML500.
The only complaint I’ve really heard is that it’s fiddly to configure the unit, but once it’s configured you’re right to go. The unit comes in two colours, black or white, both gloss finish.
Mini Projector Technology
The Vivitek Qumi Q2 features a DLP Pico chipset and BrilliantColor technologies from Texas Instruments. This unit get over 30,000 hours of lamp life which will see it running for 8 hours a day for years and years.
We were incredibly impressed with the brightness put out by this comparatively small unit, over 300 lumens. This puts the Vivitek Qumi Q2 right up there with the big boys in mini projector technology as brightness in normally lit rooms is a common complaint. The Qumi Q2 tackles this head on.
Given that it’s a light and fully contained unit with great software additions to allow you to use the unit without tethering, we have come to the conclusion that it’s currently one of the best on the market technology wise.
