The Acer K11 is one of the few projectors to offer business grade brightness levels and color quality in a package that truly befits the word “portable”. It’s size is minute, but it’s features are not.
Acer are known the world over to provide a range of products from high to low end and the K11 mini projector definitely sits on the high end with a pleasing business-like design and all the compatibility that you would expect of a projector of this caliber.
Mini Projector Features
The Acer K11 is a DLP projector that is LED driven, boasting over 30,000 hours of LED life. It has a slightly larger projection lens than your average mini projector at 19.5mm. It also has a manual focus which normally is an unwanted feature, but with a quality lens makes it possible to get a very crispy picture indeed.
Supported resolutions are Native SVGA (858 x 600), Maximum SXGA (1280 x 1024), WXGA+ (1440 x 900), all displaying at a hefty 16.9 million colors with a very respectable high contrast ratio of 2000:1.
Brightness of the projector is 200 ANSI lumens which is very high for a mini projector and makes it even more suitable for taking on business presentations where brightness levels are always a bit of an unknown. To those of you who have been holding off on getting a mini projector for this reason, check out the Acer K11, it’s sure to change your mind.
Speaking of business features, besides it’s ultra light weight of just 1.34 pounds (~600 grams), you’re sure to love it’s connectivity options and rich media functionality.
Of course you can connect your Acer K11 to your laptop or PC directly and you have VGA or HDMI for this purpose. Or you can simply load your presentation onto a USB stick, or even better a SD card, and have the rich media user interface that is built into the Acer K11 play it for you. You can also play videos or view images as a slideshow all without PC or mobile device intervention.
Sound is pretty bad coming out of the 1W mono speaker, but hey, mini projectors aren’t really known for their brilliant sound quality and it’s a drawback that can be overcome by piping it through a HiFi.
Connectivity with Apple iPhone or iPad can be achieved via a standard Apple to video adapter cable which further extends the connectivity options.
Mini Projector Technology
Acer are boasting about their SmartFormat Technology with the K11, saying that it has comprehensive support for wide-format PC signals which should remove any annoying “Signal not supported” messages when changing to widescreen resolutions.
ColorSafeTechnology takes advantage of DLP® technology (presumably Texas Instruments?) to protect against color decay and guarantee a crisp, clear viewing experience despite prolonged use.
LED light lifetime is rated at 30,000 hours, which is about typical for new generation LED driven mini projector units, but the Acer K11 also features an Auto ECO mode which lets you sacrifice some picture quality for extended LED life, reduce projector noise and consume less power. We have to ask why, as with 30,000 hours you could run this unit pretty much all day for 9 years straight and that is much more than most people will do.
