What To Look For When Playing Movies With Your Mini Projector

Have you been wondering whether a mini projector can play movies?

And if so, can a mini projector play movies to a good standard similar to big LCD screens?

Well the great news is that mini projector technology, especially DLP driven mini projectors are really starting to improve in resolution and brightness.

DLP Technology

DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology works by creating the image with microscopically small mirrors laid out in arrangement on a semiconductor microchip. Texas Instruments (the creators of this technology) call this device a DMD which stands for Digital Micromirror Device.

The great thing about DLP is that some of the more recent DLP mini projectors have come out with drastically improved resolution and brightness levels.

You can now project images in full HD and lumens that far exceed 100 ANSI lumens.

One of the key features you should look for when playing movies with your mini projector is high resolution.

A native resolution of 1080p is ideal, but not always possible. Only the very latest mini projectors at the time of writing can project at this resolution natively.

Ideally though, you should be able to pick up a mini projector with a native widescreen resolution that can take 720p, 1080i and 1080p video input. The price of these high resolution projectors are coming down quickly.

The second thing you should look for in a mini projector to play movies is the brightness.

Brightness in mini projectors is rated in ANSI lumens. Look for something that is at least 100 ANSI lumens. Ideally though, you should be able to find mini projectors with appropriate resolution that can do 300+ ANSI lumens. One of the projectors below even does 500 ANSI lumens which is one of the best we’ve found.
